In this class we will use handbuilding techniques to explore form through serving dishes. We will investigate rims, handles, and the small decisions that define how a dish functions and feels in use. Demonstrations will cover building with soft slabs, adding coils for volume, and constructing handles that integrate with the form. We will address surface using layers of glaze and patterns made with resists such as wax and latex. Finished work will be fired in Haystack’s salt/soda kiln. All levels welcome.
The Spruce Pine Potters Market is an annual show that is managed and organized by our artists who live and work in a two county area of western North Carolina. The rich history of craft in this mountain region, along with the renowned Penland School of Craft, has brought these artists to call this area home. Our unique combination of ceramic artists sets the stage for a dynamic show.

In 2020 Penland School of Craft invited me to create a few demonstration videos. It was a way for them to continue to offer programming during the pandemic, and a way to support the local artists who created the videos. I was honored to be involved in this project.
